ICT for Sustainable Growth e-NEWSLETTER May 2008 ICT is a key enabler to improve Energy Efficiency Viviane Reding, Member of the European Commission responsible for Information Society and Media, has recently highlighted the Potential of ICT to Contribute to Energy Efficiency and a European Low Carbon Economy: “Energy efficiency is likely to be a significant contributor to cutting carbon emissions by 2020 and the ICT sector, is pivotal in reaching those goals. I am convinced that ICT has a key role to play in enabling energy efficiency improvements across the whole economy, thus lowering emissions and fighting climate change". Last March at the CeBit conference EC President Barroso underlined that "…the real gains will come from ICT as an enabler to improve energy efficiency across the economy. ICT matters for energy reduction, especially in transport and the energy intensive sectors. ICT's ability to organize and innovate is a key factor". Furthermore, Viviane Reding announced that "a Strategic Commission Communication on Energy Efficiency through Information and Communication Technologies will be adopted very soon. It will serve as a basis for the launching of a consultation and partnership process. I am counting on your contribution and on your commitment. Europe needs all stakeholders to sign up to the goal of better energy efficiency to fight against climate change and to achieve sustainable growth.” EUSEW, ICT for Energy Efficiency conference Brussels, 31 January 2008 16 top-level speakers and about 200 participants contributed to the big success of this conference. The Energy and ICT sector stakeholders were widely represented together with Member State's authorities, leading personalities from associations and the research institutions, senior managers from Europe's leading companies as well as practitioners. The conference aimed at: • bringing together the ICT and the Energy sectors' stakeholders, citizens associations, businesses and public authorities to achieve the objective of improving energy efficiency across the economy, creating a synergetic effect; • highlighting the potential of ICT for improving energy efficiency towards span awareness raising, exchanging of best practices and promoting take-up, etc; • opening a debate on enhancing innovation based on research and development into an initial limited number of targeted actions that could already start to bear fruit in the short term within the most promising application areas – namely the power grid, smart buildings and the ICT sector itself. All the presentations, the summary and the consultations' results are available on: http://cordis.europa.eu/fp7/ict/sustainable-growth/event-20080131-eusew_en.html Towards a Single Information Space in Europe for the Environment (SISE) Brussels, 15th February 2008 This workshop was organised as a brainstorming event. The main goal was identify future research or innovation actions with clear European added value to support an integrated information space & market place for effective environmental management in Europe. The discussion was triggered by a presentation of the vision developed by DG INFSO on a Single Information Space in Europe for the Environment (SISE). Trends in the following topics have been discussed, that are central to implementing SISE: Web services, process chaining & uncertainties, real-time mapping & modelling, controlled vocabularies, open standards & open source software, data Interoperability & Web Communities, SOA/Web services & model driven communities, data Visualisation, SISE deployment models. Suggestions for the future included to scale-up some National initiatives and to consolidate a research agenda especially on topics like flexible chaining of distributed environmental services, smart wireless monitoring networks and sustainable deployment Models. Starting from this statement, the workshop participants provided all together a wide overview of possible applications of ICT to enable a more sustainable and integrated management of urban areas in Europe. The workshop covered a wide range of topics from tele-working, urban planning and ICT for traffic-management, to ICT for energy efficiency, protection of critical infrastructures against urban risks, or pollution reduction and complexity management. Urban areas were clearly recognized as a privilege test bed where ICT could bring a leverage effect towards a more sustainable European society. Recurrent messages included the need to influence a change of behavior at all levels (from the authorities, the private sector to the inhabitants), as well as to develop better integrated cross-sectorial approaches. All given presentations are available at: http://cordis.europa.eu/fp7/ict/sustainable-growth/workshops/ws-20080219_en.html ICT PSP INFO DAYS The ICT for Sustainable Growth Unit of DG INFSO organised two specific info and networking days that were attended by around 100 participants including experts from various companies and institutions. (1) 23 April, in the afternoon, a specific info and networking day for the Objective 2.3: "Consensus building and experience sharing in ICT for energy efficiency and sustainability in urban areas" supporting two thematic networks: - ICT for smart distributed power generation. - ICT for sustainable urban development and management. (2) 24 April, in the morning, a specific info and networking day for the Objective 2.1: "ICT for energy efficiency in public building and spaces, including lighting" supporting several pilot actions (Pilot Type B). The outcomes of the info days are available on: http://cordis.europa.eu/fp7/ict/sustainable-growth/infoday20080423-24_en.html
ICT 2008 is the biggest research event in Europe for Information and Communication Technologies. It will take place in Lyon (FR) on the 25th, 26th and 27th November 2008. It will set the agenda for ICT research and innovation in Europe for the upcoming years. The event will host leading visionaries from academia and industry and will address topics as diverse as Europe's role in shaping the future internet, ICT's contribution to advancing the sustainability agenda and alternative research paths for future ICT components and systems. These and many other cutting-edge themes will be explored in depth at ICT 2008. You could be one of the ICT 2008 protagonists suggesting either themes for networking sessions or exhibition ideas: two calls for proposals are now published.
CALL FOR EXHIBITION SESSION The ICT 2008 Exhibition intends to show concrete results of research in and around Europe related to ICTs. Exhibitors at ICT 2008 will be selected following a call for proposals. PROPOSE AN EXHIBIT! Submit your proposal directly via the website http://ec.europa.eu/information_society/ev ents/ict/2008/exhibition/call/index_en.htm Deadline: 15 May 2008 at 12h00 CALL FOR NETWORKING SESSION ICT 2008 will provide opportunities to meet and discuss possible research activities with potential partners interested in similar areas of work. Networking sessions are specifically designed to facilitate such contacts. PROPOSE A NETWORKING SESSION! Researchers, innovators and engineers from all ICT fields are invited to suggest pertinent themes for networking sessions. You can submit your proposals via the website http://ec.europa.eu/information_society/even ts/ict/2008/networking/call/index_en.htm Deadline: 16 June 2008 at 12h00 e-Newsletter: how to subscribe If you are not yet registered and you wish to receive future issues, which will be disseminated exclusively by e-mail, please subscribe at: http://cordis.europa.eu/fp7/ict/sustainable-growth/e-newsletter_en.html Contact and further information
